Your kitchen isn’t just a place where you make meals. It can be a beauty apothecary as well! Natural foods are chalked full of wonderful health benefits. Most of the time, we only get these advantages when we internally consume them through our meals, but people have been applying plants topically for thousands of years. Ancient Greeks would bath in olive oil for soft, smooth skin and it was even said that Cleopatra used honey in many of her beauty rituals.
Homemade beauty applications are not only great because it saves you money from buying store bought, but it also doesn’t have any of the harmful chemicals often added to these products. I read the backs of beauty product labels sometimes when I am out shopping, and more often than not, there is a list of ten or more ingredients and many of these I can’t even get past pronouncing the first two syllables. When you switch to natural products, you know what the ingredients are. Using natural products is also great for the environment! Every time we take a shower and wash these store bought products off our bodies, the chemicals are going down the drain and back into the environment. These chemicals alter and destroy our ecosystems and pollute our water. Going natural, we are simply giving back to Mother Earth what she has lent us.
Since fall is upon us, I whipped together a facial mask that uses the wonderful spices of the season. Just like my recipes, these ingredients have amazing health benefits. Let’s find out what they can do for your skin!
- Honey-drawing moisture from the air into the skin and retaining it, honey makes for a great moisturizer. Anti-bacterial, honey helps clean pores, heals acne, and fades scars, killing bacteria that penetrates the skin. Thanks bees!
- Nutmeg-Having anti-bacterial properties as well, nutmeg also helps clear skin, making it smooth. The spice has anti-aging benefits too, preventing the onset of premature aging such as crow’s feet, fine lines, and wrinkles. This spice makes for a great exfoliate, removing dead skin.
- Cinnamon-Reducing aging, clearing complexion, and plumping the skin, this spice is another beneficial beauty ingredient.
I tried this facial mask on the other day, leaving it on for 15 minutes then washing it off with warm water. As you can see, the only problem I had was trying not to eat it! With cinnamon, nutmeg, and honey on my face, it was like I had a dessert right there, inches away from my mouth! The results afterwards were quite impressive. My skin felt softer, tighter, fresher, and shinier. I will definitely be applying this to my face again, maybe making extra for me to snack on…
Fall Spice Facial Mask
- 1 tbsp raw honey
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp nutmeg
Mix in a small dish and apply to your face. Let sit for at least 10 minutes (if you can resist licking it off) and wash with warm water.
